Great idea. High-speed rail, whether maglev or electric, IS the future. But, clearly, the Chinese system cost more than $1.2 million. Nevertheless this is what WE should be doing. And do NOT credit Bush for supporting rail. He has consistently opposed adequate funding for Amtrak. This year, for example, he had proposed a 40% cut in Amtrak's current funding level, which is already inadequate. Unfortunately, McCain is as bad or worse, having said he would oppose ANY funding for Amtrak, which would kill it, and he says his position is "non-negotiable."
